What is Waitress About?
The Musical Waitress is based on the 2007 movie of the same name.
Jenna, a waitress in a diner, feels trapped in her small town and finds herself in an abusive marriage. An unexpected pregnancy pressures her to making a decision. As she learns about an upcoming baking contest, she realizes that it may be her only chance to leave town and start a new life.
During her struggle, Jenna keeps creating pies that reflect her emotional state, such as “I can’t have no affair because it’s wrong and I don’t want Earl to kill me”-pie. At the end, Waitress is about the journey of finding the missing ingredient in her recipe for happiness: courage.

Waitress tickets start at $79, but tend to increase the closer you get to the performance, which is why we recommend purchasing your tickets in advance.

The Best Seats for Waitress on Broadway
For Waitress on Broadway, we can recommend both, Orchestra and Mezzanine seats. As you can see on the picture below (which was taken from the last row in Orchestra), you can still see very well. Typically we recommend Mezzanine over Orchestra, as most special effects can be appreciated more from that angle. In the Musical Waitress however, there are no special effects that make Mezzanine preferred over Orchestra in our opinion. If you choose Orchestra, do not opt for the first 5 rows. Why? Just like in movie theaters, you’ll be too close to the stage!
Waitress Review
Waitress on Broadway is filled with all sorts of moments: hilarious, touching and many feel-good moments. We found the characters in the musical to be very relatable and their performances incredibly credible. Particularly the performance of “She used to be mine” gave all of us goosebumps!
Personally, we were positively surprised! We went into the musical not knowing the story, only knowing knew we were going to see an amazing musical. It turned out, the story went much deeper than we had originally anticipated. Waitress is NOT your typical love story in the style of girl meets boy, they fall in love and live happily ever after. No, Waitress is about self-reflection and self-realization.
Critics loved the Musical Waitress so much, it was nominated for not only several Tony Awards, but also a Grammy Award in the category of Best Musical Theater Album in 2017.
By the way: When entering the theater, you may notice something very unique: the smell of freshly baked pies. Yes – you can actually buy pies for $12 at the show! Also, if those creative pies from the show sound mouthwatering to you, you can actually look up the recipes and make them yourself.
Waitress Cast
The most famous actress to play Jenna in Waitress is Sara Bareilles. However, Sara Bareilles did not only play Jenna in the musical, but also created the lyrics and music for the Waitress musical in New York. In the beginning of 2018, she was paired with singer and songwriter Jason Mraz in Waitress on Broadway.

Waitress’ Brooks Atkinson Theatre is located at 256 W 47th St, right across from the Barrymore Theatre, currently hosting The Band’s Visit. To get there, take subway lines to 49 St and you’ll be less than 5 minutes away from the theater.
