Your Top Tips for Hiking The Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is the spot we all want to check out –  and whether it’s your first or fiftieth time, the hiking opportunities here never get old. We got such a great response when we asked for your tips on hiking your way into (and out of!) the Grand Canyon, we just had to put them all together.

Choose Your Trail

The best thing about hiking the Grand Canyon is the range of trails to choose from. Whether you trek to Plateau Point on the Bright Angel Trail, Skeleton Point on the South Kaibab Trail, or simply enjoy the views from the rim trail, there’s something for all abilities.

And remember, as Trekker Robert says ‘Down is optional, up is not’, so only go as far as you know you can hike back up!

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

As anyone who’s hiked the Grand Canyon will tell you, it gets pretty sweaty down there as the sun comes up.

Not all of the trail rest stops will have water points, so factor that in when you’re filling your bottles in the morning. As a rough estimate, a litre for every hour you’re hiking is a good amount – but always take more than you need and refill whenever you get the chance.

And while we’re on the subject of sunshine - don’t forget your factor 50 too, cause sunburn’s never a good look…

Start Your Hike Early

And we mean early. Trust us, you won’t miss the lie-in when you see the sun rise over the canyon!

We like to make our way out before the sun rises, for a nice cool downward start on the Bright Angel or South Kaibab trail. As expert Trekker David told us ‘take your time on the way back up as it gets hotter’ – not a hard feat when there are some incredible views to admire.

Plan Your Outfit

Making sure you’re prepared for the weather is always important when you’re hiking. Comfortable clothes and good hiking shoes are essential for taking on the Grand Canyon Trails. Hiking boots are ideal if you’re taking on a longer route, but plenty of us have hiked in sturdy sports trainers too.

A hat makes the perfect shade from the sun’s rays, and an extra layer in case the weather turns is always a great thing to pack, just in case.

A backpack is the perfect way to carry all your supplies – but make sure you zip it up tight, as the Grand Canyon chipmunks are wily little critters!

Bring Your Squad

Probably our favourite tip! Hiking alone is a big no-no, but who’d want to when you’ll have so much more fun with your mates?! As Hana told us, “everyone struggles at different points and it's the team morale that pushes each person through.”
